The Sugarplum Studio Story

Where We Started and How We Came to Be

Ever since she was a little girl, Sharon O’Connor Spatucci dreamed of making cakes. “I would create my masterpieces in two Easy Bake ovens,” she said. “I got one for Christmas and the other one I found in the trash. I’d decorate my cakes with whatever I could dig up in my mom’s kitchen, then I’d pretend to sell them to my family and friends, imagining that I was running my own bakery.”

When she was ready, Sharon enrolled in culinary school. She chose to attend Bucks County Community College in Newtown, Pennsylvania, pursuing a degree in Associate of Science – Field of Study Baking and Pastry Arts/Baker/Pastry Chef. “I loved the program at Bucks,” Sharon said. “It was the hardest I’d ever worked up to that point, but it gave me a great foundation to start my career.” The college later asked Sharon to serve on its Occupational Advisory Committee, invited her to speak at their career day in 2017, and profiled her in their Success Stories.

Once she’d graduated, Sharon began working as a Pastry Chef for bakeries in south Jersey and Pennsylvania. Soon, she decided that it was time to pass on her knowledge and began giving cake decorating demonstrations at libraries, community centers, and other public places.

Wanting to expand her teaching, Sharon first launched Sugarplum Studio as a mobile cake decorating service in 2015, hosting private cake and cupcake decorating parties in people’s homes throughout the south Jersey area. By 2016, she added public workshops for both children and adults to Sugarplum Studio’s offerings.

As demand for her classes continued to grow, Sharon began looking for a space that would let her teach cake decorating in her own studio. Sugarplum Studio found its home in January of 2017. With the addition of Michele and Paola to round out the staff, the studio began offering cake, cupcake, and cake pop decorating workshops as well as private parties for both kids and adults.

“I couldn’t be more excited to open Sugarplum Studio,” Sharon said. “Our guests have really embraced the new space and it’s given me the chance to lay out the studio with the kind of smooth, efficient flow I’ve always wanted. Thanks to everyone who’s visited so far and I hope to see more of you in the future!”
